Mountain delivery

Fancy a job? Now hiring!

This explains how mountain restaurants are kept stocked. I suppose it also explains why everything is so expensive in those places. Not pictured, but also seen carried in the same manner: beer barrels. (Picture taken in Slovakia).

Ramp to first floor window

I saw this in Amsterdam and found it puzzling. My conclusion is that the ramp is there to allow a cat to get in and out of the house. Ingenious.

Boundary stone, Great Torrington

The plaque on the wall says, simply "the large stone in the pavement originally marked the boundary of the old borough", but it doesn't say when that was, nor what the significance of the boundary might have been.

Fire hydrant sign

Tagged:

Wikipedia claims that the figures shown on a fire hydrant sign are in SI units, though the example they depict would imply a 1mm pipe, which seems unlikely. From my youth I seem to remember that the upper figure was in feet and the lower in inches, which is somewhat more credible.

I'll check the upper distance figure, though I'm not going to open the hydrant lid up to see how big the pipe is. Anyone know what the correct unit is?

Picture Paragraphs

The book, "Picture Paragraphs", provided the inspiration for this site. It is a collection of pictures of things one might encounter in everyday life, accompanied by explanations of the little mysteries that surround them.

It is my hope that others will join me in making this site a similar treasure trove, a rich collection of mysteries of the mundane.
